About

CSCUBS is organized by PhD- and MSc-Students and aims to promote research in computer science and scientific exchange among students. The participation of researchers and practitioners of the field is also encouraged.

The 5th Computer Science Conference for University of Bonn Students (CSCUBS):
  • For new research or development related to Computer Science, including University projects, theses, and outcomes of other professional activities.
  • Promotes scientific exchange among students.
  • Peer-reviewed.
  • Online publication of accepted papers.

  • The 5th Conference will be held on May 16, 2018 (Dies Academicus) at the University of Bonn. CSCUBS intends to provide the ability to connect with each other and engage in discussions about the participants’ respective research and development, and also to establish opportunities for knowledge and technology sharing. Submissions to CSCUBS should describe new research or development related to Computer Science, including University projects, theses, and outcomes of other professional or leisure activities.

We welcome submissions from all areas of Computer Science (in English or German).

    Prizes and awards:

    • best paper (250 €)

We welcome submissions from all areas of Computer Science. You can choose one or more of the following formats:

    • Posters (A1 format)
    • Short Papers (4-6 pages)
    • Full Papers (10-12 pages)
    • Lightning Talks (2-3 min talks without slides)

Your submission may be based on seminars, labs, your thesis or a side project. While submissions in English are strongly encouraged, submissions in German are accepted as well. Submissions will undergo a peer review process that is coordinated by the program committee. The accepted papers are going to be published online.

Please use the EasyChair system to make your submission. For anything except posters and slides, please strictly adhere to the following document template for writing:

Every Student is invited to submit one or more of these formats: Posters, Demo Programs, Long Papers, Short Papers, Lightning Talks

    Important for PhD Students

For PhD students (including students who are about to start a PhD) we are organising a dedicated poster and networking session. This will require a 2-page abstract on the topic of your PhD. Accepted submissions will be presented as A1 posters.

In this poster session you will be able to network with other PhD students as well as identifying potential synergies.

Abstract: Modern data management techniques must deal with data that is inherently noisy or uncertain: this is the case, e.g., of the results of automated processes (information extraction, machine learning, etc.), and of untrustworthy information (e.g., Web pages or crowdsourced datasets). To address this challenge, the field of probabilistic data management has studied how to model uncertain data in a principled way, e.g., using relational databases with probabilistic annotations, that concisely represents a probability distribution. Probabilistic data management also studies the computational complexity of query evaluation on probabilistic data, e.g., determining in which cases we can efficiently compute the probability of a query result.

Note on Talk: In this talk, I Antoine Amarili presents how probabilistic data management can leverage the structure of uncertain data, e.g., using graph-theoretic measures such as treewidth. The general approach is to decompose the input database instance to a tree-shaped encoding, and use Courcelle's theorem to rewrite the query to a tree automaton that runs on this encoding. I will present how these tools can be extended to probabilistic data, following the approach known as knowledge compilation: we compute a circuit representation of the uncertain query result, we show that it belongs to a restricted class of circuits, and we use this to perform probability computations on the circuit. The talk will also present other ways to use these circuit representations to enumerate query results or to describe the provenance of the results.
